Why Does Anxiety Make Sleep Worse?

A Traditional Chinese Medicine View on “Disharmony Between the Heart and Liver”

Many people experience this cycle:

  • The more anxious you feel, the harder it is to fall asleep

  • Your body is exhausted, but your mind won’t shut down

  • You wake up easily, dream a lot, or feel unrested in the morning

  • Poor sleep then makes your anxiety even worse

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, this is not simply “overthinking.”It is often a pattern known as “Disharmony Between the Heart and the Liver (心肝不和)”.

What Do the Heart and Liver Control in TCM?

In TCM theory:

  • The Heart (心) governs the mind and spirit (Shen)→ Emotional stability, calmness, quality of sleep

  • The Liver (肝) governs emotional regulation and Qi flow→ Stress handling, mood balance, tension release

When the Heart is calm and the Liver Qi flows smoothly,👉 the mind settles naturally, and sleep comes easily.

How Anxiety Disrupts Sleep in TCM

Long-term anxiety, stress, or emotional suppression can cause Liver Qi stagnation.

When Liver Qi becomes constrained:

  • Emotions become harder to regulate

  • Internal tension builds

  • Heat may develop over time

This disturbed Liver Qi then disturbs the Heart, leading to:

  • Racing thoughts at night

  • Difficulty falling asleep

  • Light, fragmented sleep

  • Vivid or excessive dreaming

👉 This is what TCM describes as Heart–Liver disharmony.

Common Signs of “Heart–Liver Disharmony”

People with this pattern may experience:

  • Anxiety or irritability

  • Insomnia or difficulty staying asleep

  • Palpitations or a sense of inner restlessness

  • Chest tightness or frequent sighing

  • Dry mouth or bitter taste

  • Waking between 1–3 a.m. (the Liver time in TCM)

Not everyone will have all symptoms —but anxiety + poor sleep together is a key clue.

How TCM Helps Restore Balance

TCM does not focus only on “forcing sleep.”Instead, treatment aims to calm the Heart and regulate the Liver at the same time.

Common approaches include:

  • AcupuncturePoints such as Shenmen (HT7), Taichong (LV3), Neiguan (PC6), and Anmian help calm the mind and smooth Liver Qi

  • Herbal therapy formulas are adjusted to soothe Liver Qi, clear internal heat, and nourish the Heart

  • Lifestyle and dietary guidance reducing stimulants, late-night mental activity, and emotional overconsumption

The goal is not sedation, but restoring the body’s natural ability to relax and sleep.

What You Can Do Before Bed

✔ Reduce emotional stimulation at night (news, work messages, intense conversations) ✔ Stretch gently to release Liver tension

✔ Avoid overthinking “whether you’ll sleep” — anxiety about sleep worsens insomnia

✔ Create a predictable bedtime routine

TCM emphasizes that:

Sleep comes when the mind is settled, not when it is forced.

If anxiety is stealing your sleep, it’s not because you’re weak or lack willpower.

From a TCM perspective, your Heart and Liver are asking for re-balancing.

When emotions flow smoothly and the mind feels safe, sleep will return — naturally and steadily.

📍 Jessie’s Note:If insomnia persists for weeks or months, or is accompanied by palpitations, chest discomfort, or worsening anxiety, professional assessment is important. Treating the correct TCM pattern is key to lasting improvement.
