Why Do TCM Practitioners Always Ask to See Your Tongue? What Do White or Yellow Coatings Mean?

This is a great question! Many patients who come to De Acupuncture x Herbs Centre get a little shy when we ask: "Stick out your tongue, please." 👅
Don't be embarrassed!
In TCM, your tongue is essentially a "Health Report Card." It doesn't lie.
Even before you describe your symptoms, your tongue has already revealed your body's secrets.
🧐 Why is Tongue Diagnosis So Important?
Think of your tongue as an "Endoscope" for your body. In TCM, "Tongue Diagnosis" (舌诊) is one of the most direct ways to see what’s happening inside. Since the tongue is connected to your internal organs via meridians, its color, shape, and "coating" tell us instantly: 👉 Is your body "Cold" or "Hot"? 👉 Are your Qi and Blood levels sufficient? 👉 Is your digestive system sluggish or functioning well?
👅 Tongue Coating Decoded: What is Your Tongue Saying?
A healthy tongue should be pale pink with a thin, light-white coating. If it looks different, take note!
1. ⚪ Thick, White Coating (Like a layer of frost)
What it means: Your body is harboring "Cold" or "Dampness."
How you feel: You feel chilly easily, have a poor appetite, feel bloated, and have loose stools.
Common cause: Daily iced drinks, 24/7 air conditioning, and too many raw/cold foods (salads, watermelon). Your digestive system is effectively "frozen."
2. 🟡 Yellow, Greasy Coating
What it means: There is "Heat" or "Damp-Heat" in the body.
How you feel: You experience dry mouth, bad breath, acne, dark urine, and irritability.
Common cause: Staying up late, high stress, and eating too much fried, oily, or "heaty" food (fried chicken, Nasi Lemak, Durian). This is a classic case of "Excess Fire."
3. 🍓 "Tooth Marks" on the Edges (Scalloped Tongue)
What it means: "Spleen Deficiency."
How you feel: Your tongue is so swollen that it presses against your teeth. This indicates your body isn't processing fluids well, and the "swelling" has reached your tongue. You feel heavy, lethargic, and never feel fully rested.
🛠️ What to do if your tongue isn't looking "pretty"?
Don't just scrape your tongue!
The coating is only a symptom; the root cause lies within.
For White/Thick Coating: You need to warm your Yang and clear dampness. Cut down on ice, drink ginger tea, or try Moxibustion to warm your spleen and stomach.
For Yellow/Greasy Coating: You need to clear heat and dampness. Drink plenty of water, cut down on spicy foods, and use acupuncture to regulate your "internal flow" and lower that "fire."
For Tooth Marks: Focus on strengthening your Spleen.
🆘 Is your tongue sending an SOS?
If you look in the mirror and notice:
The coating is so thick you can’t see the color of your tongue.
The tongue color is dark or purplish.
There are deep cracks or fissures.
This is a sign that your body is hovering on the edge of "Sub-Health."
