In clinical practice, I often hear people ask me: "Doctor, acupuncture is very effective. Can I get it every day?"
This question seems reasonable, after all, many people want to improve their physical condition as quickly as possible. But in reality, acupuncture isn't a "more is better" situation; getting acupuncture every day might actually be counterproductive.
Today, let's talk about why acupuncture isn't suitable for daily sessions. 🌿

🌟 Acupuncture Principle: Focused on "Regulation," Not Mere Stimulation
Acupuncture works by stimulating acupoints to adjust the body's Qi and Blood circulation, achieving the effects of unblocking meridians, strengthening the body's vital energy, and expelling pathogens. However, the human body isn't a machine; excessive stimulation can disrupt its natural balance.
TCM emphasizes "moderation." Regulation is an art of rhythm, not a forceful assault.
💡 Why Can't You Get Acupuncture Every Day?
Over-stimulation Depletes Qi and Harms Vital Energy:
Frequent acupuncture can put the body in a continuous "passive stress" state, especially for those with weaker constitutions, potentially leading to fatigue, palpitations, and poor sleep.
➡️ Simply put, it's like "failing to nourish, and instead becoming more deficient."
The Body Needs Time for "Absorption and Integration":
After acupuncture, the body's Qi, Blood, and meridian states change. The body needs time to adapt and absorb the therapeutic effects, just like muscles need a recovery period after exercise. Doing it daily often yields suboptimal results.
Prone to "Stimulus Resistance":
With daily needling, some people may become less sensitive to the stimulation, requiring stronger stimulation to elicit a response. This can lead to treatments becoming "heavier and heavier," increasing the burden on the body.
✅ How Often Should Acupuncture Be Done?
Acupuncture frequency varies depending on the individual's constitution and condition:
Situation | Recommended Frequency |
Acute pain, inflammation | Daily or every other day, 3-5 consecutive sessions, then adjust |
Chronic conditions, general conditioning | 1-2 times per week, continue for 3-4 weeks to observe |
Weak constitution, postpartum conditioning | Once per week, focusing on warming tonification and recovery |
👉 Your practitioner will arrange the rhythm based on your constitution and condition. Never decide to get it daily on your own!
🌿 TCM's Wisdom of "Moderation"
TCM treatment isn't just about "what to do," but also about "how much to do and when to do it." Acupuncture is like watering flowers: too much will rot the roots, too little will cause wilting. Finding the right rhythm for you will yield the best therapeutic results.
📌 Small Reminders
If you feel particularly fatigued, experience insomnia, or have mood swings during treatment, it might be due to "over-mobilization" caused by excessive frequency. It's advisable to communicate with your therapist immediately.
If the treatment effect isn't obvious, don't rush to increase the frequency. Instead, consider adjusting your constitution and overall conditioning approach.
