Frequent long burps right after eating are not entirely a normal physiological phenomenon. While an occasional burp might be nothing to worry about, if it happens frequently, it could be your body sending you signals.
Why Do We Burp Right After Eating?
Imagine your stomach is like a bag for food. When you eat too quickly or too much, or if the food is too greasy, too cold, or too hot, this bag gets uncomfortable and expands. It's like blowing up a balloon; when there's too much air, you burp to release it.
🔹 Eating Too Quickly or Too Much:
Rapid or excessive eating increases the stomach's burden, leading to stomach distension and stimulating the diaphragm.
🔹 Excess Stomach Acid:
Too much stomach acid can irritate the esophagus, causing the diaphragm to reflexively contract.
🔹 Indigestion:
Indigestion produces a large amount of gas. This gas rises upwards, irritating the diaphragm and causing burping.
How Does TCM View Burping?
In TCM, burping right after eating is mainly related to Spleen and Stomach dysfunction. The Spleen and Stomach are considered our "Root of Post-Heaven Essence," responsible for digesting food and absorbing nutrients to provide what the body needs. If the Spleen and Stomach functions are not good, various symptoms of indigestion will appear, and burping is one of them. If your stomach is uncomfortable, burping is its way of signaling to you: "I'm full, and I don't feel good!"
🔸 Spleen and Stomach Weakness (脾胃虚弱):
For people with weak Spleen and Stomach, digestion is poor. Food stays in the stomach for too long, easily leading to Qi stagnation, which causes burping.
🔸 Improper Diet (饮食不节):
Eating too quickly, too much, too hot, or too cold, or consuming foods that are hard to digest, can all overload the Spleen and Stomach, leading to burping.
🔸 Liver Qi Stagnation (肝气不舒):
Unharmonious Liver Qi can easily affect the Spleen and Stomach's transportation and transformation functions, leading to burping.
🔸 Damp-Phlegm Obstruction (痰湿阻滞):
If dampness and phlegm obstruct the middle burner (Spleen and Stomach area), it can also impede the Spleen and Stomach's function, causing burping.
What Exactly Is a Burp?
When you burp, your diaphragm (the muscle between your chest and abdomen) suddenly contracts and then rapidly relaxes, making a "burp" sound. This is your body's way of releasing gas from your stomach.
Easy Ways to Relieve Frequent Post-Meal Burping at Home:
🌟 Chew Thoroughly:
Chew your food completely to reduce the burden on your stomach. Don't gobble your food; give your stomach time to work properly.
🌟 Avoid Overeating:
Eat at regular times and in moderate amounts; avoid gorging yourself.
🌟 Mind Food Temperature:
Avoid consuming foods that are too cold or too hot.
🌟 Limit Carbonated Drinks:
Carbonated beverages produce a lot of gas, worsening burping.
🌟 Maintain a Cheerful Mood:
Emotional agitation can affect Spleen and Stomach function.
🌟 Acupressure:
Massaging acupoints like Zhongwan (中脘穴) and Neiguan (内关穴) can help alleviate symptoms.
If these methods don't yield results, then you might consider TCM professional help.
When Should You Seek Medical Attention?
🔹 Burping lasts for an excessively long time, over 24 hours.
🔹 Burping is accompanied by other symptoms such as chest pain, abdominal pain, or vomiting.
🔹 Burping recurs frequently and affects daily life.

How Does TCM Treat Burping?
TCM mainly focuses on regulating the Spleen and Stomach, using common methods such as:
🌱 Herbal Medicine (药物治疗):
Based on different patterns, various Chinese herbal formulas are chosen for regulation. For instance, for Spleen and Stomach weakness, formulas like Shenling Baizhu San (参苓白术散) might be used; for excessive stomach acid, acid-reducing herbs might be prescribed.
🌱 Acupuncture Treatment (针灸治疗):
Through acupuncture, acupoints are stimulated to regulate Spleen and Stomach function and alleviate burping.
🌱 Gua Sha and Cupping (刮痧拔罐):
These methods can help unblock meridians and relieve stomach discomfort.
🌱 Dietary Therapy (饮食调理):
Maintain a light diet, eat small, frequent meals, and avoid raw/cold, greasy, and spicy irritating foods.
🌱 Lifestyle Regulation (起居调养):
Ensure adequate sleep, avoid excessive fatigue, and maintain a cheerful mood.
Frequent burping after eating, though a minor issue, might be your body reminding you that your Spleen and Stomach could be having problems. Through TCM regulation, burping symptoms can be effectively alleviated.
