Having a bowel movement immediately after eating is not necessarily healthy.
Why do we say this?
🔶 Food Digestion Process
Once food enters the intestines, it needs time for digestion and absorption. If bowel movements occur too quickly, it suggests that the food might not have been fully digested and absorbed, meaning the body can't fully utilize the nutrients.
🔶 Intestinal Peristalsis
Intestinal peristalsis is a complex process. Peristalsis that's too fast can lead to diarrhea, while too slow can lead to constipation. Having a bowel movement immediately after eating might indicate overly rapid intestinal peristalsis, and if this happens consistently, it could negatively affect intestinal health in the long run.
In TCM, Immediately Having a Bowel Movement After Eating...This is considered a sign of Spleen and Stomach weakness, indicating that your Spleen and Stomach might not be in good condition.。
In TCM, immediate post-meal bowel movements are called "diarrhea" or "seepage" (泄泻). The Spleen and Stomach are the "Root of Post-Heaven Essence," responsible for transforming and transporting food essences. When the Spleen and Stomach are weak, their transportation and transformation functions become abnormal, and food cannot be digested and absorbed in time, easily leading to diarrhea.
The Spleen and Stomach are like our "food processing factory," responsible for digesting food and absorbing nutrients. If this "factory" has a problem, and food isn't digested well, it's easy to experience loose stools.
Why Does Your Spleen and Stomach Get Unhappy?
🔹Eating too quickly or hastily:
Just like a machine, if it works too fast, it's prone to problems.
🔹Eating too cold or hard foods:
The Spleen and Stomach don't like foods that are too cold or too hard; eating too many can harm them.
🔹Too much stress:
A bad mood or high stress can also affect the function of the Spleen and Stomach.
TCM's explanation for this situation primarily includes the following points:
🌱 Spleen Deficiency and Impaired Transportation (脾虚不运)
A weak Spleen means its function of transforming and transporting food essences is diminished, leading to food stagnation, insufficient digestion and absorption, and thus diarrhea.
🌱 Spleen and Kidney Yang Deficiency (脾肾阳虚)
When both Spleen and Kidney Yang are deficient, there's insufficient Yang Qi to warm and invigorate the Spleen and Stomach, leading to impaired transportation and transformation, resulting in undigested food in stools and diarrhea.
🌱 Irregular Diet (饮食不节)
Overeating, or excessive consumption of raw/cold and chilling foods, can damage the Spleen and Stomach, also causing diarrhea.
Easy Ways to Relieve Immediate Post-Meal Bowel Movements at Home:
🌟 Dietary Adjustments
Small, Frequent Meals:
Reduce the amount of food per meal and increase the number of meals to lessen the burden on your digestive system.
Warm, Easily Digestible Foods:
Eat more warm, easily digestible foods like congee, noodles, and millet.
Avoid Raw/Cold, Greasy, and Spicy Foods:
These foods can irritate the digestive tract and worsen diarrhea.
Avoid Chilling Fruits and Melons:
Such as watermelon and iced drinks, as they can harm Spleen Yang and worsen diarrhea.
Avoid Excessive Cold Drinks:
Cold drinks can irritate the intestines and worsen diarrhea.
Avoid Strong Tea and Coffee:
These beverages have stimulating effects that can accelerate intestinal peristalsis.
🌟 Regular Routine:
Ensure adequate sleep and avoid staying up late.
🌟 Keep Warm:
Especially your abdomen, to avoid exposure to cold.
🌟 Moderate Exercise:
Appropriate exercise helps enhance Spleen and Stomach function, but avoid strenuous activity.
🌟 Maintain a Cheerful Mood:
Emotional agitation or tension can affect bowel function.
🌟 Develop Good Bowel Habits:
Have bowel movements at a regular time and avoid holding stools.
If these methods don't yield results, then you might consider TCM professional help.
How Does TCM Help Treat Frequent Post-Meal Bowel Movements?
TCM treatment mainly focuses on strengthening the Spleen and tonifying Qi, and warming and nourishing the Spleen and Kidneys.
🔸 Chinese Herbal Medicine (喝中药)
A TCM practitioner will prescribe herbs that strengthen the Spleen and Stomach to help regulate them.
🔸 Acupuncture (针灸)
Through acupuncture, certain acupoints on the body are stimulated to help the Spleen and Stomach restore their function.
🔸 Dietary Therapy (饮食调理)
Eat less raw/cold, greasy, and spicy foods, and eat more easily digestible foods like congee and noodles.
⚠️ Specific treatment plans should be conducted under the guidance of a TCM practitioner. Do not self-medicate.
Important Reminder:
⚠️ Every individual's situation is unique, and TCM treatment methods will vary accordingly.
⚠️ In addition to TCM, you can also see a Western doctor for examinations to rule out other possible diseases.
⚠️ Regulating the Spleen and Stomach takes time; don't expect immediate results.
